Motsoeneng does not deserve a bonus, he must be fired – Phumzile Van Damme

DA says acting CEO wants to pay COO a bonus for negotiating a deal three years ago

Hlaudi Motsoeneng does not deserve a bonus, he must be fired

22 August 2016

The DA will tomorrow request an unequivocal confirmation from the Minister of Communications, Faith Muthambi about whether SABC COO, Hlaudi Motsoeneng will be awarded a bonus.

According to media reports, Acting SABC CEO, James Aguma, wants to pay Motsoeneng a bonus for negotiating a deal between the SABC and Multichoice, three years ago.

Motsoeneng most certainly does not deserve a bonus. He must be fired.

Not only has the SABC been rocked by scandal after scandal with Motsoeneng at the helm, he has overseen the financial mismanagement of the public broadcaster. The SABC is expected to make losses of over a billion for the 2015/16 financial year.

Tomorrow, Minister Muthambi will appear before the Communications Portfolio Committee for a briefing on the SABC’s Editorial Policy, its financial position and other matters.

The DA will pose the question of the bonus and many other issues to the Minister and the SABC board.

We maintain that a single four hour meeting is insufficient to delve into the deep-set institutional rot currently facing the SABC.

A full-scale parliamentary inquiry is necessary.

The DA will also follow up on the scheduling of the inquiry, which members of the committee in principle agreed to last week.

The DA looks forward to engaging with Minister Muthambi and the SABCtomorrow.
