ANC welcomes UN Security Council resolution calling for ceasefire in Gaza

The African National Congress (ANC) welcomes the recent UN Security Council resolution calling for a ceasefire in Gaza. This crucial step towards peace in the region signifies a collective recognition of the urgent need to halt the violence orchestrated by the Israeli genocidal regime and alleviate the immense suffering endured by the people of Palestine. The ANC reiterates our call for a genuine two-state solution as the only way towards lasting and sustainable peace.

We note the significance of the United States' abstention in this resolution. While we acknowledge this move, we urge for more robust and active engagement from all international stakeholders towards achieving a lasting, just peace in the region, including radical reforms to the UN Security Council, which has been held hostage by the U.S.'s veto power on countless resolutions relating to Palestinian freedom and statehood.

We express our deepest appreciation to the ANC led South African government for its unwavering commitment to solidarity with Palestine. The ANC's consistent support stands as a beacon of hope and solidarity for the Palestinian people, reinforcing our nation's principled stance on human rights and justice.

However, while the ceasefire is a critical step forward, it is imperative to recognize that it alone cannot address the root causes of the conflict. The ultimate goal remains the complete and unconditional end of the occupation of Palestine. Ceasefires, while necessary, must be accompanied by concrete steps towards achieving a just and lasting solution.

The ongoing genocide in Gaza serves as a painful reminder of the urgency of the situation. Shockingly, over 32,000 Palestinians have lost their lives to Israeli bombs and assassinations, with a staggering 75% of them being innocent children. This appalling reality underscores the urgent need for immediate action to end the violence by the Israeli genocidal regime and hold perpetrators accountable.

As the ANC, we call upon the international community to redouble its efforts towards achieving a comprehensive and lasting just peace in the region. This requires a genuine commitment to ending the illegal occupation of Palestine, and ensuring the right of return for Palestinian refugees.

We stand in unwavering solidarity with the people of Palestine and reaffirm our commitment to their struggle for freedom, justice, and self-determination. Until Palestine is free from occupation and oppression, our resolve to advocate for their rights will remain steadfast and unyielding.
