Results of the 22 July municipal by-elections - IEC

Commission says ANC won 7, the DA two and the IFP one of the wards contested on Wednesday

The African National Congress has won seven, the Democratic Alliance two and the Inkatha Freedom Party one of the 10 wards contested in yesterday’s by-elections. The African National Congress lost one ward to the Inkatha Freedom Party while the Democratic Alliance retained its wards. Neither of the two independent candidates contesting by-elections won.

Voter turnout varied in the by-elections between 21.90% and 62.68% with an average of 44.24%.

The new councillors for the African National Congress are:

Eastern Cape: Melikaya Phongolo in Ward 1 in the Makana [Grahamstown] Municipality – EC104. The seat was retained by the party with 77.84% of the 729 votes cast. Voter turnout was 44.86%.

KwaZulu-Natal: Sbonelo Justice Luthuli in Ward 12 in the uMshwathi [Wartburg] Municipality – KZN221. The seat was retained by the party with 95.84% of the 1 568 votes cast. Voter turnout was 41.79%.

Limpopo: Mmangwako Jonathan Sekgoloane was the only candidate in Ward 13 in the Blouberg [Bochum/My Darling] Municipality – LIM351. No voting took place as the ward was uncontested. The seat was retained by the party. 

Mpumalanga: Doctor Stefaans Khanyile in Ward 2 in the Steve Tshwete [Middelburg] Municipality – MP313. The seat was retained by the party with 90.80% of the 985 votes cast. Voter turnout was 21.90%.

North West: Keneth Maluleka in Ward 9 in the Moretele [Makapanstad] Municipality – NW371. The seat was retained by the party with 91.74% of the 1 204 votes cast. Voter turnout was 38.84%. 

Western Cape: Dinah Okhuis in Ward 2 in the Matzikama [Vredendal] Municipality – WC011. The seat was retained by the party with 50.06% of the 2 350 votes cast. Voter turnout was 62.68%; and

Western Cape: Benjamin Fanele in Ward 10 in the Langeberg [Robertson] Municipality – WC026. The seat was retained by the party with 85.25% of the 1 252 votes cast. Voter turnout was 42.70%.

The new councillors for the Democratic Alliance are:

Western Cape: Mark Sydney Willemse in Ward 9 in the Knysna [Knysna] Municipality – WC048. The seat was retained by the party with 68.98% of the 1 892 votes cast. Voter turnout was 48.02%; and

Western Cape: Peter Joseph Myers in Ward 10 in the Knysna [Knysna] Municipality – WC048. The seat was retained by the party with 99.15% of the 1 419 votes cast. Voter turnout was 39.59%.

The new councillor for the Inkatha Free Party is:

KwaZulu-Natal: Zakheleni Zibuse Xulu in Ward 5 in the Ntambana [Ntambana] Municipality – KZN283. The party won the seat with 53.96% of the 3 027 votes cast. Voter turnout was 55.75%. The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress.
