SABC Bill a "victory for the working class" - YCL

Statement issued by the Young Communist League August 14 2008

YCL Statement on the adoption of Broadcast Amendment Bill by parliament!

The Young Communist League [uFasimba] notes and welcomes the decision by parliament to unapologetically adopt the Broadcast Amendment Bill which will compel the President of the Republic to consult the National Assembly Speaker in appointing the SABC Board and vesting more powers to the Speaker to appoint an Interim Board.

The YCL views this as a victory for the working class and the poor against political patronage and abuse of public institutions by the 1996 class project. This is further a progressive step towards the long overdue dissolution of the illegitimate Board that was constituted in a clandestine and factional manner in retaliation to the ANC Polokwane Conference leadership outcomes.

As the YCL we call on the ANC and parliament to move with speed in dissolving the SABC Board in a concerted effort of rebuilding its dented image and reputation as a truely public broadcaster.
