SACP condemns the mugging of SABC TV crew

The South African Communist Party is disappointed at, and condemns in strongest terms possible, the mugging last night in Johannesburg of an SABC TV crew. The crew was on assignment to cover the story of Zambian President Edgar Lungu's arrival at Milpark hospital for medical examination when they were robbed of their belongings.

The SACP calls for police to move speedily in their investigations, arrest the perpetrators and ensure that they are brought to book. The SACP further calls for members of the public who could assist in locating the perpetrators to come forward and co-operate with the police. The SABC must look into what happened with a view of taking active steps to prevent similar occurrences on workers in their line of production.

The SACP reiterates that South Africa will defeat crime and corruption through active social mobilisation augmenting and complimenting the work done by the authorities established for that purpose.

To deal with destabilising hooliganism in our communities, including crime and the scourge of drugs, such as nyaope, it is critical that the people consolidate grass-roots and community mobilisation in all fronts. We must all build and strengthen organs of people's power such as Street Committees and Community Policing Forums.
