Stellenbosch University needs to build inclusive campus - Phumzile Van Damme

DA NS says racial tensions exposed by "Luister" documentary shouldn't be swept under carpet

Stellenbosch University needs to build an inclusive campus

25 August 2015

As the Democratic Alliance we condemn all instances of racial discrimination, which aim to foster divisions in society. We have a duty to uphold the Bill of Rights and Constitution to ensure that we build a fair and inclusive South Africa where citizens of all races feel free in their own skin.

The racial tensions at Stellenbosch University, as exposed by the “Luister” documentary should not be swept under the carpet. To this end, we agree that there needs to be an investigation into this matter, so as to establish all of the facts, and to take the necessary action to remedy the situation.

The DA also calls upon all stakeholders – including Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Higher Education and Training and the leadership of the University and the students – to find each other in order to formulate a way forward. A dialogue which takes into consideration the concerns of the students is essential.

University campuses should be hubs of progress, equality, liberty and knowledge, where people of all races and backgrounds are able to grow with an aim of later building a better South Africa once they enter the work force.

Racism has no place in South Africa, and must be condemned. We must now work together to make sure that we build an inclusive country, built on the principles of freedom, fairness and opportunity for all.
