FW de Klerk Foundation looking for a suitably qualified legal expert to fill the position as soon as possible

VACANCY: DIRECTOR - CENTRE FOR CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS

The FW de Klerk Foundation wishes to appoint a suitably qualified legal expert as soon as possible as Director of its Centre for Constitutional Rights, to protect and promote the Constitution in the interest of everyone in South Africa. 

Applicants will have an opportunity to make a significant contribution to the defence and promotion of the Constitution in a critical period of the history of our young constitutional democracy.

The applicant should have:

- a passionate commitment to upholding the Constitution

- extensive knowledge and understanding of the Constitution and the process that led to its adoption

- (preferably) experience in dealing with constitutional matters

- the ability to write clear and authoritative opinions

- good human relations and communication skills

Preferable qualifications required:

- post-graduate law degree (preferably master’s degree in Public Law/ Constitutional Law)

- experience in Public Law, specifically Constitutional Law

- admission as advocate or attorney

- experience in political science will be an added advantage

The Director’s duties would include promotion of the values, rights and principles in the Constitution through inter alia:

- constitutional analysis of actions, policies, and legislation

- dialogue and interaction with government, non-governmental and juridical organisations

- drafting of constitutional opinions

- writing articles on constitutional matters

- provision of advice on constitutional matters

- litigation

The Director would also be required to supervise personnel and administrative matters related to the Centre and co-ordinate the Centre’s activities with those of the Foundation.

Salary and conditions of employment will be subject to experience and the Foundation’s budget.
