Tim Flack evicted from committee for wearing shorts - SANDU

Union says the behaviour of ANC MPs towards its WCape organiser was disgusting and degrading

Joint Media statement by South African National Defence Union (SANDU) and Tim Flack( in his personal capacity)

Cape Town

10 October 2013

We are appalled at the disgusting behaviour of the ANC MPs in the Parliamentary Committee for Defence and Military Veterans today at which a citizen of this country, who has the fullest right to attend and observe committee meetings was chased like an animal from the meeting chamber in the most humiliating and degrading way.

Apparently the biggest sin committed by Mr Flack, who happens to be the SANDU Western Cape Regional Organiser, was wearing shorts which displayed tattoos on his legs. There is no basis for evicting Mr Flack from the meeting.

The explanation and excuse used by the ANC MP's in the committee is stripped of all substance and is nothing else than a vulgar abuse of power by people who impose their mindless prejudice on citizens of this country. It is a disgrace to parliament and to democracy. One can not help but suspect that there are more sinister motives at play given Mr Flack's position at SANDU.

We will not let this matter rest. Instructions have already been given to lawyers to launch proceedings against the Chairperson of the committee, its ANC members present at today's meeting and the ANC itself in the Equality Court in Cape Town to obtain a finding of unfair discrimination against the respondents and a claim for damages.

Ordinary citizens can not allow the institutions like parliament to be used as a launching pad for unfair discrimination and dehumanising of ordinary citizens by elected officials who ought to be ashamed of themselves.

We call on the Speaker and the ANC to say clearly where they stand on this issue.

In another sub text and even more sinister was the officials of Armscor who witnessed this humiliation and added to it by laughing at Mr Flack's degrading. These officials should rather explain to SA why their incompetence are placing SA soldiers' lives at risk and potentially jeopardising military operations as the Minister of Defence pointed out in an affidavit to the High Court.
