UNSC resolution highlights urgency of crisis in Gaza – EFF

Fighters say this is a significant move aimed at establishing a sustainable ceasefire and facilitating humanitarian assistance

EFF statement welcoming the UN Security Council resolution on Gaza

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) welcomes the resolution passed by the UN Security Council, demanding an immediate ceasefire in Gaza for the month of Ramadan. This significant move, aimed at establishing a sustainable ceasefire and facilitating humanitarian assistance, is a crucial step towards alleviating the suffering of the people in Gaza.

The resolution, which received overwhelming support with 14 members voting in favour, signals a collective commitment to promoting peace and stability in the region.

The unanimous agreement highlights the urgency and importance of addressing the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

Currently, 32,226 Palestinians in Gaza, predominantly women and children, have been killed since October 7, 2023 with 74,518 others enduring injuries. Additionally, this conflict has forcibly displaced 85% of the territory's population, decimated vital infrastructure, and exacerbated conditions, leading to starvation and famine due to grossly inadequate aid deliveries.

However, it is of no surprise that the United States of America (US) abstained from the Security Council vote, although this is a significant shift from their previous vetoes that have stopped the Security Council from holding Israel accountable for its occupation of Palestine, and the war crimes they have committed for over 75 years.

The USA, just this week, withdrew funding from the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) for aiding Palestinians, and gave Israel an additional $3,8 billion in aid. With this backing from the USA Israel remains emboldened to continue their ethnic genocide of Palestinians unless humanitarian aid into Gaza is accompanied by military aid for the Palestinians.

While the EFF hopes that Apartheid Israel will fully comply with the terms of the resolution, we will continue to call for and fight for the end of their occupation of Palestine. The EFF stands in solidarity with the people of Gaza and reaffirms its unwavering support for their struggle for justice and freedom.
