We are accelerating transformation - UCT

Gerda Kruger responds to HETN, says new policy will actually lead to admission of more black students

UCT accelerating transformation

3 March 2015

The University of Cape Town has taken note of the remarks made by Mr Lucky Thekisho of the Higher Education Transformation Network (HETN) where he repeated several previous claims accusing UCT of a litany of matters, including "unabated racism" and having an "admissions policy that does not advance transformation". He also repeats his threat of serving legal summonses on UCT.

The UCT admissions policy is specifically designed to accelerate the admission of black students. It has redress at its very heart. It is strengthening our previous admissions policy, which has delivered tangible results in attracting black (i.e. SA African, Coloured and Indian) students. We are confident that it will work to broaden the diversity on our campus. Our student population is 60% black and we believe the numbers will climb as we introduce the improved admissions policy for 2016 applications. The policy is available on www.uct.ac.za.

Our invitation stands for the HETN executive to visit UCT to determine the facts.
