Acts provide for re-opening of land claims and establishment of Officer of Valuer-General

President Zuma assents to the Land Restitution Act

President Jacob Zuma has, in terms of section 84(2)(a) of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, 1996, assented to the Restitution of Land Rights Amendment Act.

The Act will amend the Restitution of Land Rights Act of 1994 by, amongst others, amending the cut-off date for lodging a claim for restitution and to further regulate the appointment, tenure of office, remuneration and the terms of and conditions of service of judges of the Land Claims Court.

The Act now provides for the re-opening the lodgment of land claims by those who missed the 31 December 1998 deadline to lodge land claims. The lodgment of land claims shall take place over a period of five years, from 30 June 2014 to 30 June 2019.

President Zuma assents to the Property Valuation Act

President Jacob Zuma has, in terms of section 84(2)(a) of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, 1996, assented to the Property Valuation Act 2014.

Among other things, the Property Valuation Act will provide for the establishment, functions and powers of the Office of the Valuer-General; provide for the appointment and responsibilities of the Valuer-General; provide for the regulation of the valuation of property that has been identified for land reform as well as property that has been identified for acquisition or disposal by a department.
