Booi slaps down SASFU over navy chief remarks

Portfolio committee on defence regrets and denounces union's statements against Vice Admiral Mudimu

PORTFOLIO COMMITTEE ON DEFENCE AND MILITARY VETERANS

The Portfolio Committee notes with concern the media statements made by the South African Security Forces Union [SASFU] against the Chief of the South African Navy, Vice Admiral Mudimu, on 8 June 2009. We regret and denounce this course of action and appeal that the independence and integrity of the Chief of the South African Navy be respected.

The Committee is aware of the grievances and frustrations of military unions as expressed in correspondence received to date and urges that these grievances be voiced in a responsible manner without compromising military discipline and professionalism.

The Committee wishes to reiterate its previous invitation to military unions and other stakeholders to approach the Committee with any concerns. This will assist the Committee to, on behalf of the all South Africans, exercise its constitutional oversight obligation over the Department.

Issued by Mnyamezeli Shedrack Booi, ANC MP: Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Defence and Military Veterans, Parliament, June 11 2009
