Makhosonke Msibi shot and killed in front of his children - ANC KZN

Party says its Ulundi branch chairperson attacked on his return from a ceremony welcoming IFP and NFP members into its ranks

THE ANC CONDEMNS THE MURDER OF ITS BRANCH LEADER IN ULUNDI

12 August 2013

The African National Congress (ANC) in KwaZulu-Natal condemns in the strongest terms the murder of its visionary and hard-working branch chairperson in Ulundi, Comrade Makhosonke Msibi.

Comrade Msibi was sprayed with a hail of bullets at his Ulundi home on Sunday evening right in front of his children. The incident happened barely hours after he had just returned from a ceremony welcoming hundreds of new members from the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) and the National Freedom Party (NFP) in Nongoma.

Comrade Msibi, 48, was one of the comrades who recruited thousands of members for the ANC in Ulundi since he joined our movement. We have lost a person who ensured that the ANC was on course to emerge as the dominant force in the area generally and in particular at the next election in Nongoma.

Considering that we are heading for the 2014 elections, the ANC is deeply disturbed by Msibi's murder as it happened in an area where the ANC has in the past elections experienced intimidation from people who felt threatened by our presence in their backyards, and unable to contest in the battle of ideas.

We were convinced that the province has moved away from these barbaric acts of political killings where ANC members are killed with the intention of wiping them out. These political killings are an indication of political bankruptcy and immaturity of people who have been rejected by the people of our province.

The perpetrators should learn from history. These acts simple serve to make us even more determined to entrench full democracy and free political activity throughout KwaZulu-Natal.

We send our condolences to the Msibi family, comrades and friends. We call for a swift and far reaching investigation to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to book. Cde Msibi is survived by his wife and three children.
