Public Protector to probe Cape Town land deal - ANC Chief Whip

Mathole Motshekga says investigator already assigned to work on complaint

PUBLIC PROTECTOR TO INVESTIGATE CITY OF CAPE TOWN-NASPERS DEAL

14 March 2012

Today, 14 March, the Chief Whip of the Majority Party in Parliament submitted a letter of complaint to the Public Protector, asking her to investigate the suspicious City of Cape Town-Naspers's multimillion rand property deal.

The City of Cape Town is intending to buy a piece of parking space from media group Naspers, which independent property analysts have valued at no more than R50 million, for a whopping R106 million. The value looks heavily inflated and raises questions regarding who is set to benefit out of the deal.

We are pleased that the Public Protector has already made an assessment of our complaint and has concluded that it is within her jurisdiction. She has also confirmed that she will be conducting a preliminary investigation into the allegations, and an investigator has already been assigned to work on the complaint.

Below please find a copy of the letter the Chief Whip sent to the Public Protector.
