Why Zwelinzima Vavi is a target - COSATU KZN

Zet Luzipo says the corrupt elements are angry about call for lifestyle audits

COSATU KZN'S response to the possible charging by the ANC NWC of COSATU's General Secretary

As the Federation of trade unions in KZN we have read and analyzed the media statements that suggested that there was a decision by the NWC to charge COSATU general secretary, Cde Zwelinzima Vavi based on the COSATU CEC press statement. We are quite concerned about the silence of the ANC National Leadership on this matter which could mean that such a possibility in their minds does exist.

The ANC remains a revolutionary movement and needs to be reminded about the role, character, nature and protocols that govern the Alliance. We remain committed to this Alliance but cannot allow the demise of our existence as a progressive trade union Federation.

We want to appeal to the leadership of our Federation at all levels, as well as our membership, to remain calm and focus. Cde Zwelinzima Vavi must continue to remain loyal to the Federation and not to those who want to advance their desire for private wealth accumulation. As workers we have nothing to gain from those tenderpreneurs except subjecting us deeper into poverty. We remain convinced that this tiny minority will do anything in their power to pounce on those they see as a stumbling block to unfair private wealth accumulation.

Cde Vavi is a target because they have failed to deal with him through the smear campaign as they sought to tarnish his image. The entire saga is based on anger because of our demands for lifestyle audits. We must remain focussed to that and we must resist being provoked and diverted.

The class project in the previous NEC failed and even those new tendencies in the current one are going to fail. This is tantamount to an old wine in a new bottle and will never succeed. Ours therefore is not just to defend COSATU and its leaders but also to defend the ANC from those who want to steal it from the workers and the poor for their narrow selfish financial interest.

We therefore do not take this rumour seriously, but rather as an "April Fool's Day Joke" or probably  "2010 World Cup Fever"

Our strategic task is to address the situation faced by our communities and the challenges facing the working class in general, not to be pre-occupied with Sunday school politics. We need mature leadership from the NWC of the ANC as leader of this alliance not early Chile-hood Development in politics.
