As Mcebisi Skwatsha withdraws from leadership contest

STATEMENT ON THE WESTERN CAPE PROVINCIAL CONFERENCE PEC RESULTS

The ANC in the Western Cape is holding a successful 7th Provincial Conference at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) over the weekend (11 - 14 February 2011).  This conference was a culmination of efforts by the Provincial Task Team (PTT) under the leadership of Comrade Membathisi Mdladlana and later replaced by Comrade Zo Kota-Hendricks which was established by the ANC in July 2009 together with ANC NEC deployees led by Comrade Trevor Manuel.

The conference was attended by a total of 718 voting delegates that included branch members and ANC Leagues and was observed by the alliance partners including Sanco.  The Conference was addressed by President Jacob Zuma and received messages from the tripartite alliance organisations in the Province.

The conference elected Comrade Marius Fransman unopposed as the Provincial Chairperson after the withdrawal of Comrade Mcebisi Skwatsha.  Also elected unopposed onto the top five positions are the following: Deputy Chairperson; Comrade Abe Bekeer, Provincial Secretary; Songezo Mjongile, Deputy Provincial Secretary; Comrade Maureen Natalie Gillion and Provincial Treasurer; Comrade Fezile Calane. The conference will continue tomorrow to finalise the election of additional members.

The outcome of the nomination and election of the top five marks the beginning of normalizing of the ANC politics in the Western Cape.  It also augurs well for the forthcoming local government elections that will be contested in all wards by the ANC in the province.

Under the newly elected leadership the ANC has renewed itself and reaffirmed its commitment to the principle of non-racialism and therefore laid a firm foundation to regain its dominance and leadership both within and outside of government structures.
