ANC and EFF unsure of each other's support – John Moodey

DA Gauteng PL says parties deliberately set out to collapse Tshwane Special Council meeting

ANC and EFF unsure of each other's support in attempting to unseat the DA in Tshwane

17 January 2020

The Democratic Alliance (DA) is appalled that the African National Congress (ANC) and the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) deliberately set out to collapse this week’s Tshwane Special Council meeting by demanding that the Speaker should change the order of the agenda to deal with a motion of no confidence against her first.

This is completely against council meeting protocol, and both the EFF and ANC knows it well.

The City of Tshwane's rules and orders by-laws provide in section 8 (3) that the order of business at a special meeting of council is determined by the Speaker.

The fact is that both the ANC and the EFF are not sure of each other’s support in their joint attempt to unseat the DA in Tshwane.

The special sitting, which was called by the ANC and the EFF specifically to bring motions of no confidence against the Mayor Stevens Mokgalapa and Speaker Katlego Mathebe, was abandoned after the ANC and EFF staged a walkout.

The ANC's motive was clear from the start of the meeting as their behavior was disruptive, including calling for extensive caucus breaks and numerous frivolous objections to collapse the meeting.

The uncompleted agenda of this week’s Special Council meeting will be carried over to the next ordinary council meeting that is scheduled for 30 January 2020.

The DA will continue to put the residents of Tshwane first.
