The African National Congress (ANC) expresses profound concern regarding the ongoing standoff at the Gold One mine in Springs, where over 200 miners have remained trapped underground since Monday.

This situation has given rise to significant distress and uncertainty for those directly affected, as well as their families and the broader community.

We express gratitude that approximately 200 workers have emerged from the subterranean depths and are currently receiving the necessary medical and emotional support.

The ANC urgently calls for a peaceful resolution to this distressing situation, emphasising the imperative need for all parties involved to engage in constructive dialogue, ensuring the safety and well-being of the miners currently confined.

Furthermore, we urge law enforcement agencies to exercise restraint, maintaining an unwavering commitment to safeguarding human lives.

Reports indicate that this impasse involves the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU) and raises serious labour-related concerns. The ANC recognises the complexity of these issues and acknowledges the legitimate grievances of the workers that have led to this standoff.

Given the circumstances, we advocate for a peaceful resolution. It is crucial that all parties, including AMCU, mine management, and relevant stakeholders, come together for constructive dialogue.

Through meaningful and respectful engagement, we believe it is possible to find a resolution that addresses the miners' concerns while ensuring the safety and well-being of all involved.

Working-class unity and leadership are crucial for enhancing the lives and safety of mine workers, achieving a decent living wage, and driving transformation in this vital sector of the economy.

Thus, we appeal to the leadership of both the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) and AMCU to play a pivotal role in resolving this impasse and guiding workers' struggles.

Our foremost priority as the ANC is to prevent any harm or loss of life in this situation. We call on all parties to prioritise peace, understanding, and compromise as we collectively seek a path forward that respects the rights and interests of all stakeholders.
