Jobs for Cash: DA welcomes Motshekga’s commitment to release full report

19 April 2016

The DA welcomes Minister Angie Motshekga’s commitment in Parliament today that she will release the full and unexpurgated ‘Jobs for Cash’ report on the 6 May.

Minister Motshekga’s commitment goes some way to alleviate our previous concerns that the ‘Jobs for Cash’ report could be altered following consultations with SADTU.

We also welcome Minister Motshekga’s commitment to bring the ‘Jobs for Cash’ report to Parliament, in order for it to be properly scrutinised and discussed.

After a few wobbles, it appears that Minister Motshekga is fully committed to ensuring that SADTU will be held accountable for the practice of selling teaching posts. We look forward to engaging with Minister Motshekga further on the report in Parliament when it is released.

Minister Motshekga appeared before the Basic Education Portfolio Committee this morning following the DA’s request for her to brief the Committee on various government proposals to improve the education system which were blocked by SADTU.

Fixing our education system requires the political will to take on SADTU and introduce real accountability measures into our school system. Minister Motshekga appears to be demonstrating some resolve in this regard with her commitment to release the full and unexpurgated ‘Jobs for Cash’ report. But we need her to go further than this if we are to break the SADTU protection racket that shields weak teachers at the expense of poor children, and the many excellent teachers in our country.
