Mathew Wolmarans' appeal dismissed - COSATU NWest

Union says questions still remain as to why Moss Phakoe was murdered

COSATU NW welcomes outcome of appeal of accused in murder of comrade Moss Phakoe

The Congress of South African Trade Unions in the North West Province is informed that the North West High Court has dismissed the appeals of Mathew Wolmarans and Enoch Matshaba who were convicted for killing Moss Phakoe last year and were sentenced to 20 years and life imprisonment respectively.

COSATU has always believed in the justice system of the country and we said we would comment after the appeal case had been heard by the High Court. Hence we make this statement to welcome the decision of the court to reject the appeal.

In as much as COSATU is happy that the accused have been convicted and have lost the bid to appeal, COSATU still believes that the matter should be taken up further and the investigation should go down and find out why comrade Moss was killed, which the convicted people have not told the court.

We call on the court and the police to investigate the matter in detailed including the funding.

COSATU would like to welcome the judgement and hope that it brings some relief to the family of Comrade Moss and that the resentencing must be done quickly

Statement issued by COSATU North West Provincial Secretary Solly Phetoe, July 30 2013
