The Solidarity Movement today announced that it would participate in the march against corruption on 19 August. The Solidarity Movement consists of 18 institutions which include trade union Solidarity, civil rights organisation AfriForum, the Federasie van Afrikaanse Kultuurvereniginge (FAK) and the social organisation Solidarity Helping Hand. The Solidarity Movement is representing approximately 310 000 families.

Nine other trade unions and several civil organisations, including the human rights organisation Section 27 and Outa are already supporting the march.

Solidarity also decided to support NUMSA’s Section 77 application to Nedlac to have the march declared a protected protest action. The Solidarity Movement will accept an invitation from former Cosatu Secretary General, Zwelinzima Vavi, to serve on the organising committee.

“Corruption is a problem that spans across communities and all South Africans should stand together against the problem. It will send a powerful political message if civil society across traditional dividing lines could stand together against the issue. We are also inviting other trade unions and civil organisations to participate in the march,” Solidarity Chief Executive Dirk Hermann said.
