Wits: Adam Habib a 21st century Uncle Tom – EFFSC

Fighters say university collected nonsensical, baseless allegations against its members

EFF Student Command (EFFSC) statement on its lynching by Wits University

22 August 2015

The EFF Students Command (EFFSC) expresses its utter disgust at the suspension of EFF Students Command members and the deregistration of the EFF Students Command by the University of Witwatersrand.

Students who have been raising issues around the anti-blackness of the institution have been suspended by the EXCO Council of Wits and denied access to classes and their residences. No disciplinary hearing has found the suspended students guilty and although video footage clearly shows other parties taking part in the altercation, only EFF Students Command members have been suspended.

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Witwatersrand, Adam Habib’s decision to target EFF Students Command members and sanction the EFF Students Command exposes him for the model twenty first century Uncle Tom he is. In less than a year in office, Habib has been very instrumental in terrorising black students and silencing those who oppose his tyranny.

The institution simply collected nonsensical, baseless allegations against our ,members; all of which together to not bear the minimum weight for the suspensions or  sanctioning the EFF Students Command as a society in the institution.

The purging of the EFF Students Command by the institution must be seen for what it really is. A blatant silencing of the only mouth piece of the marginalised black students in the institution and the suppression of an organisation that is seen to be a threat to the white supremacist structure the institution has upheld and maintained since time immemorial.

The EFF Students Command is disgusted at how the institution, through its Vice Chancellor Adam Habib is sneaking apartheid laws and tactics to deal with people that oppose the injustices in the institution.

The EFF Students Command further asserts that the targeting of the EFF Students Command and its members in the University of Witwatersrand is not an isolated case but an extension of the victimisation and persecution of the organisation and its member in all institutions of higher education in South Africa. Wits has just simply taken the baton from the University of Johannesburg which has used similar tactics to silence the EFF Students Command in its backyard.

We are fully aware that the ruling party has deeply entrenched itself in all institutions of higher learning and  using university management and the Student Representative Council to execute its dirty tricks.

The targeting and suppression of the EFF Students Command in the University of Witwatersrand, University of Johannesburg, Tshwane University of Technology, Vaal University of Technology, TNC College, Buffalo City College and many more institutions across the country intensified as soon as the Minister of Higher Education and Training Blade Nzimande made his utterances that the EFF must be killed.

Not only has he made these utterances but has spent the past few weeks pressurising institutions to act against the EFF Students Command.

The ruling party has made peace with the fact that SASCO and the entire PYA has lost support from the greater student community. It has since decided to be that sore loser father who fights his children’s battles to protect his family’s honour.

What is happening at Wits does not surprise us, but we are utterly disgusted not only at the management of this institution but the government of this country which is hell bent on silencing us by any means necessary.

As the EFF Students Command we fully are aware we operate within a society that hates truth, justice and those who question. However, we are bound by our commitment to always fight along or for the students of South Africa and our deep set love for our people; no amount of intimidation will deter us. We are ready for anything the ruling party and its minions decide to throw at us.
