Motshekga buckling under SADTU pressure – Gavin Davis

DA says teachers union has done everything in its power to delegitimise 'Jobs for Cash' report

Jobs for Cash: Motshekga buckling under SADTU pressure

6 April 2016

Minister Angie Motshekga’s statement postponing the release of the long-awaited  ‘Jobs for Cash’ report indicates that she is buckling under pressure from SADTU.

Since Minister Motshekga announced the timeframes for the report’s public release, SADTU has done everything in its power to delegitimise the report and stop it seeing the light of day.

The DA has repeatedly called on Minister Motshekga to stand firm in the face of SADTU intimidation, and to release the ‘Jobs for Cash’ report within the timeframe she committed herself to.

Unfortunately, it appears that the Minister has allowed herself to be bullied by SADTU.

The ‘Jobs for Cash’ report is now scheduled for public release on 6 May – but only after further consultation with SADTU. The concern now is that ANC-aligned SADTU will use this extended period of consultation to get the final report sanitised.

We therefore call on Minister Motshekga to issue a public assurance that the ‘Jobs for Cash’ report will not be amended to protect SADTU.

As it stands, the report shows how SADTU has captured six out of the nine provincial Education Departments and is running an extended network of bribery and corruption in our schools.

Minister Motshekga must ensure that the full and unexpurgated ‘Jobs for Cash’ report is released without fear or favour. It is time to rise above tripartite alliance politics and do what is best for the children of our country.
