Shilowa blasts ANC efforts to undermine NPA

COPE DP says the ‘Zuma charges dropped’ story was leaked to pressure the prosecuting authority

Mbhazima Shilowa, deputy president of the Congress of the People, has condemned another example of the ANC undermining institutions of government.

"The statement leaked to the media that the NPA was going to drop the case against Zuma was a calculated leak by ANC people close to Zuma. This was specifically designed to put pressure on the NPA. Ironically however this strategy to undermine the rule of law through issuing untruths has backfired, "he said.

"This is because two weeks ago the NPA challenged MR Zuma in court on matters of charges against him. This proves that the NPA has not reached any decision and is further evidence that the ANC is disrespecting government institutions and trying to destabilise the NPA in an attempt to subvert the natural course of justice. He concluded that," If the ANC was a currency it has certainly lost its value".

COPE has said it also notes the pressure that is being placed on the SA president and the NPA to withdraw the Nicholson Judgement appeal before the Supreme Court of Appeals.

COPE stands for the rule of law and accountability of SA's leaders to the people. We are calling on the ANC to stop interfering with the course of justice and for the NPA to fulfil its constitutional mandate to the people of South Africa.
